IN THE KNOW: FDA announced a ban on ingredients in Antibacterial Products

Check one off for the good clean products! After years of controversy and complaints to the FDA about concerns from consumers and those of us working in the Natural Consumer Product Industry for healthy clean products, the FDA announced a ban on ingredients in Antibacterial Products and Body Washes (see below).  Over the years we have worked very hard to help educate and reach our goal to reduce harsh chemicals affecting the risks of Hormone/Endocrine Disrupters (EDC’s) in products by offering an alternative of pure wholesome products derived from natural salts, gums and organic ingredients. Not only do our products perform, they are tested for Hormone/Endocrine Disrupters (EDC’s). We take extra steps to ensure every process from ingredients to the equipment the product comes into contact with, to the final packaging, will not contain any chemical that may leach into our products. We do this while offering superior performance and healthy results.

• See below: On September 2, 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a rule banning the use of triclosan, triclocarban and 17 other chemicals used in hand and body washes, which are marketed as being more effective in ridding germs than regular soap, which may cause or be at risk for reproductive toxicity or carcinogenicity. The report states “In some rat studies, we’ve seen decreases in thyroid hormone levels. And, in some cell-based systems, we seen changes in cells’ abilities to responsd to estrogen and testosterone”.

 
If the product makes antibacterial claims and they have followed the correct monograph (rules for labeling set by the FDA), then on of the 19 ingredients listed below such as “triclosan, triclocarban” should be listed on the label of the product. Companies have a year to remove these ingredients from their products or remove the products from the market, the agency said.   Note: This ban only applies to consumer products.
 
Here is a list of the 19 ingredients you want to watch out for:

• Benzalkonium chloride
• Benzethonium chloride
• Cloflucarban
• Chloroxylenol
• Hexachlorophene
• Hexylresorcinol
• Iodophors (Iodine-containing ingredients)

• Iodine complex (ammonium ether sulfate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate)
• Nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanoliodine
• Poloxamer—iodine complex
• Povidone-iodine 5 to 10 percent
• Undecoylium chloride iodine complex
• Metheylbenzethonium chloride
• Phenol (greater than 1.5 percent)
• Phenol (less than 1.5 percent)
• Secondary amyltricresols
• Sodium oxychlorosene
• Tribromsalan
• Triclocarban
• Triclosan
• Triple dye

 
FDA report states: in 2013 Consumer Wash PR they identified certai active ingredients that were considered ineligible for evaluation under the OTC Drug Review as a consumer antiseptic wash; and noted they are waiting for requested documentation for eligibility the following active ingredients could be determined to be eligible for evaluation:

• Alcohol (ethyl alcohol)
• Benzalkonium cetyl phosphate
• Cetlpyridinium chloride
• Chlorhexidine gluconate
• Isopropyl alcohol
• Polyhexamethylene biguanide
• Salicylic acid
• Sodium hypochlorite
• Tea tree oil
• Combination of potassium vegetable oil solution, phosphate sequestering and triethanolamine.
